Who Are We
Our History
Founded in 1929, New Hope began as a group of 20 believers known as the Footstep Followers of Christ, worshiping at Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church. Led by Rev. F.R. Freeman and four deacons, the congregation was built on faith, service, and community.
By 1935, the church was formally organized and renamed New Hope, symbolizing the calling to follow Christ (Matthew 16:24). Under the leadership of Rev. Eugene Sheffield, New Hope built its first sanctuary and established foundational ministries like the Junior Choir, Prayer Meetings, and the Baptist Training Union.
From the 1940s to 1980s, New Hope flourished under pastors like Rev. C. Jones, Rev. B.J. Lane, and Rev. John Parker Phillips. These decades saw new member growth, sanctuary expansions, and the launch of beloved traditions such as Women’s Day, Men’s Day, and community outreach.
In 2018, Pastor Troy K. East began a new chapter for New Hope with a vision centered on worship, family, and spiritual growth. Ministries like the Praise Team, Ladies of H.O.P.E., Youth on F.I.R.E., and ASL Ministry have helped us grow in love and impact.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, New Hope stayed connected with Park & Praise services, online streaming, and prayer calls. In 2022, we embraced “The Next Level” vision with a major sanctuary renovation and renewed focus on worship excellence.
Through every season, we’ve come this far by faith, committed to sharing the hope of Christ with our community and beyond.
